Alesha's experience with ABB

Experiencing life at ABB through a Graduate Student or Internship Program

The professional development and learning are important for ABB and for their employees. Each year ABB become part of various initiatives that support the development of young people.

L-R: Miguel Reynon, a recent graduate and now a full-time employee based in Auckland, and Alexey Sobolev who is an intern, working in the Power Conditioning team in Napier, New Zealand.

Conducted in all departments of the company with an average duration of 3 to 6 months, the ABB Graduate Student or Internship Program allows interns like Alexey Sobolev and graduates like Miguel Reynon, to experience what life is like at ABB.

Alexey Sobolev is an intern who has recently joined the Napier product management team in New Zealand, to assist with refining and developing the TSA process for Power Conditioning, Napier. A TSA (temporary sales approval) is for anything (application, product or even feature) that is not standard across a specific product line. The project Alexey is working on aims to improve efficiencies and increase communication flow between various departments, through the development of a new online based App specifically for the TSA process.

ABB often onboards new graduates or students still studying to help give them real life experience and exposure to a working environment. ABB understands that it can be challenging for students or graduates to get their first steppingstone in the workforce and often provides that opportunity.

For Alexey, he is a new graduate who has just completed a bachelor’s degree in computer and mathematical sciences, majoring in networking and software development from Auckland University of Technology (AUT). When he was applying for the intern position, he soon found that his values and vision were aligned with ABB’s. In addition, Alexey was captivated by ABB’s sustainable technology and global footprint.

He has been with the Power Conditioning team for a few months now and aims to have his project concluded in January. “I have really enjoyed my experience working with ABB, I would suggest it to anyone. I love working independently and participating in meetings on a regular basis to ensure I meet expectations. When I was at Napier for a week, it was an absolute pleasure to meet everyone. It was like meeting a new family to me, which I loved”. Alexey continues to say that working with ABB makes him proud and grateful that he has been given the chance to apply his new learned skills from studying at AUT.

Wendy Hoare, ABB’s Human Resources Business Partner for Smart Power in New Zealand, commented on the Internship Program and the opportunities it can offer students who are wanting to take that next step in their career. “Giving students the opportunity to gain work experience, relevant skills and personal growth is something we are committed to. The Intern program embraces our commitment to diversity and inclusion and has a very positive impact on our culture. It is incredibly rewarding to our business to follow the progress of our interns and seeing them flourish in their careers.”

Furthermore, ABB has recently employed a graduate from AUT, Miguel Reynon through their Graduate Student Program, as a Sales Support Engineer for their Motion business. Miguel commented on his experience since being with ABB as a full-time employee. “My overall experience with ABB has been great! I wanted to work for ABB because I wanted to be part of a company that is continuously leading the innovation and technology industry with one of its core values motivated by sustainability. As a graduate engineer, being surrounded by like-minded driven people, coupled with an exceptional youthful working environment makes ABB such a great place to start my career.”

ABB in New Zealand has a strong relationship with AUT. ABB collaborate with AUT to help support students (both current and former), through graduate and internship programs and furthermore, participating at AUT’s Career Days, allowing students to explore the endless opportunities offered by ABB.

ABB is a technology leader in electrification and automation, enabling a more sustainable and resource-efficient future. The company’s solutions connect engineering know-how and software to optimize how things are manufactured, moved, powered, and operated. Building on more than 130 years of excellence, ABB’s 105,000 employees are committed to driving innovations that accelerate industrial transformation.
